A Clinical Review of 170 Major Abdominal Operations in Patients over 60 Years of Age

Abstract
The hospital records of all patients over 60 years of age under going abdominal surgery at Pusan University Hospital from the begining of 1958 till the end of 1967 were reviewed. After studying the surgical and pathological reports a total of 170 cases was selected for further analysis; the results were as follows:
1. Malignant diseases occurred in 90 cases (52.9%) and non-malignant diseases in 80 cases(47.1%). Stomach carcinoma was commonest among the most frequently encountered malignancy and acute appendictis was commonest among the no-malignancy.
2. The sex distribution was 59 males: 31 females among those with malignant diseases; it was 62 males; 28 females among those with mon-malignant diseases.
3. There were 25(14.7%) cases with opstoperative complications; wound complications (40%) were the most frequently encountered.
4. The mortality rate following the abdominal surgery in these patients of sixty years and over was 7.7%.
